About Us

Where does the name THE LAYHEAD B&B come from?

Finding a name for a hotel is no easy task. It should reflect different aspects of the property. If possible, the history or the location should be recognizable. The target audience should be able to identify with the name. It should be short and memorable, and it should be clear what type of accommodation it is.

We didn’t take any of that into account when searching for a name. Okay, maybe the last point: we are a B&B — a boutique B&B. What a hotel is called and why is something we’ll come back to later. Our criteria were quite different. It was clear that the name had to be in English, for two reasons. The first was our proximity to Denmark and the many English-speaking guests who visit Lübeck. The second reason lies in our affinity for British bed and breakfast culture and the hospitality that comes with it.

Our hike along the Coast Path in Cornwall

To find inspiration, we took a trip to Cornwall in May 2018. There, we hiked the 60 kilometers from Penzance to St Ives in five stages. The Coast Path runs along the Atlantic, with the sea on the left and an ever-changing landscape on the right.

But we weren’t there just for the Coast Path — we were also there for the overnight stays, those very B&Bs where you are welcomed in the warmest way by the landlord or landlady. We were made to feel like truly welcome guests. We had wonderful conversations, received tips for the evening pub visit, enjoyed a generous breakfast the next morning, and were sent off with good wishes for the next stage. All of this was offered with great hospitality. We loved it, and the encounters on that journey remain a guiding principle for our understanding of hospitality to this day. On the second-to-last stage, we passed a farm the Layhead Farm. The name immediately resonated with us, because it described exactly what we wanted to create: a place where you can lay your head — or, more poetically, rest your weary head. The decision was made. We are well aware that the name *The Layhead B&B* is a little unusual, not the easiest to pronounce, and rather long. But it has sparked countless conversations with our guests. Hearing the different interpretations of the name is fascinating — and we wouldn’t want to miss a single one of them.
